Avoid any strong theme. Keep it neutral - do not overfurnish or smother it with silly knick knacks.

If you don't want to paint the walls, do like I did one time. I cut different sizes and shapes out of 1/4" birch plywood and then laid a thin layer of foam on top . I covered the pieces with different colored fabrics I bought. I stapled the fabric on after wrapping the fabric around the back The selection of fabric is endless. I even used a Beach Towel that my girl and I took to the beach. You can even wallpaper the panels------anything that you like!
The panels when done, are screwed to the wall with dimple washers under the head of the screws so the panel is not damaged. Then, if you want to change any, you can.

You could paint the ceiling black and then buy a couple of bags of glow in the dark stars and put them on the ceiling! A friend did this with more than 250 stars and it was sooooo cool!! If you have a black light that helps also! Paint 2 walls red and 2 white and then take a regular sea sponge and just barely dab the sponge into the blk. paint , rub some off on a newspaper and then dab the white wall very lightly or use the red paint on the white wall and the white on the red wall or both red and black on white and vice versa!

Those colors are definitely masculine in combination, which is what you're going for. I'm assuming it's a bedroom? If so, do you need it to be dark in the room or can you have it airy. Dark room would call for maybe a dark red to burgandy type curtains with matching spread, black furniture or dark wood furniture and black throw pillows for the bed, and the walls a darker shade of taupe to blend it all together. I would throw in a white and green potted plant to draw attention and sounds like a pretty nice room.

Hey, Black is a strong color to paint a wall. I would prolly not paint any walls black. You could paint two walls red and two white. Then do your furniture and curtains in black. I seen some really cool black fabric with dragons and dice and stuff on it at Walmart. If you know someone that sews they could easily make you some curtains. Also instead of using your light on the ceiling you could get some rope lights and run them around the top of the room and use lamps and black lights to light your room. Before hubby and I got married he had lizards and black lights in his room, I thought it was cool. You can get red and black comforter and pillows and make your bed a prime luxury. Black and red tend to be harder to find. Good luck
