A lot of public universities offer really good Interior Design programs. Maybe you could try taking some extra-curricular courses in that area. A lot of it depends on where you live as well. I live in Mississippi and interior designers here typically don’t make very much. However, I do know a guy that lives here that has somehow gotten his name out and he has people as far away as Houston that fly him to their homes and pay him extremely well to decorate them. It’s just a matter of location and your popularity as a designer! Good luck!

The Bureau of Labor Statistics – Occupational Outlook Handbook gives a great deal of information regarding a wide variety of occupations in the United States of America. The link below is specifically about Interior Designers.

It varies depending on the geographic area that you work in. The larger the city the larger your potential income. Interior Design requires many skills other than “artistic” including managerial and technical. Having a major in “Art” will not prepare you for being an interior designer or decorator. You need to be able to hand draw, draft, computer aided drafting and design – most like AutoCAD or Vector Works, which you can only get in an Interior Design program. You will need to become familiar with space planning, textiles, various building codes and safety codes. Most students that graduate with a 4 year degree in New York City start at around $35,000 per year. There is a big drop after you leave a major metropolitan area – you can start as low as $20,000 per year.

You need to become successful at reading and writing English in order to succeed at any profession.
