I have AutoCad and Softplan. And no matter what, a house, a piece of furniture, a little wood working project, I start with pencil and paper (well, I use my tablet PC, but still just sketching, haha). And except for houses, that's as far I get. Now if you need to communicate ideas with other people, in a business situation, where you are producing many things, and need separate people to produce separate parts, then AutoCad. But if this is something just for yourself, a pencil and paper, maybe calculator and scale, and you are ready.
