figuring out where the angle of the light hitting the stage. Figuring out the area of the light, including the spill lights. and also the different shapes used in gobos and other things such as the movable spotlights and where they might hit the stage.

This is a complex area of study. My best advice would be to check your local library for the book “Matters of Light and Depth” by Ross Lowell, or for issues of the monthly magazine “American Cinematographer”. These will provide easy-to-understand photos and charts, as well as tons of great information and quotes on lighting for the stage or screen.
