Wait a few years, save your money and then raise the house 3 feet -- at least. Unless you are 3 ft. tall, 6 feet ceiling could not possibly meet building code requirements for human habitation.

Paint the room a light color. Decorate Japanese style. With a few pieces of low furniture with dark wood, cushions and colorful pillows on the floor. Build some floor to ceiling cabinets for storage to hide clutter. Place a few green houseplants on the floor. Have strategically- placed modern floor and desk lamps. Don't install or hang lights from the ceiling because that would really draw attention to the low ceiling.

First you should start with the walls. Paint them a creamy yellow shade. It brings part of the attention to the walls because the colour is such a beautiful shade. If you don't want anyone to feel claustrophobic while they are there, then you do just this thing. Paint the roof a light shade of colour that makes peoples eyes feel like the roof is higher. The point of this is to make this ceiling look like the sky or a high free of space area. It can be any shade of colour you like as long as it is a nice shade and goes well with the walls. The walls also don't have to be yellow but they should be a creamy, partly bright and a good brand of paint. The roof can be shaded up from the walls so the colours sort of mix to one. Believe me it will make the atmosphere feel more free and spacious. You could also put a small chandelier or small light that hangs (not too big or it will hit the ground). Along with the paint that will already make the guest or person(s) in the room feel comfortable, the chandelier will hang at a normal level if you get a small one and will make the person(s) is the room feel like the chandelier is up higher. Trust me all these tips will work. If you need more help try and think of things that will make people feel like they are in a room that feels like the outdoors. Put all my tips into one big idea. Good-Luck with everything.

Avoid dark colors it'll seem even more closed in-the lighter colors will give it a more open feel, also, you may want to consider making it an area where most activities would be done sitting down, ya know board games, t.v. area, reading area, or even an area to just sit and talk...to avoid the, ya know, bumping and what not, and just that general feeling of the looming ceiling...and uh... no NBA players it may make them insecure about there size(kidding, kinda)...hope I helped

Paint the celing a couple shades lighter than the walls. It is an optical illusion that also works well for the sub-conscience. I seen that done on an episode of Trading Spaces on TLC, the outcome was very positive.

Try painting the walls one color, and then put verticle stripes (very clost the the other color that was already painted) on the walls. It will make it feel higher

I had a friend once who put mirrors on the ceiling and it made the room seem much bigger. That or keep it a light color or the room will seem smaller. Also, if you paint vertical lines on the walls, it will make the ceiling seem higher. Good luck.
